After having many pleasant dining experiences at Joe Allen's in the past, I was very much looking forward to treating my little sister to a meal there after a night at the theatre. Unfortunately my fond memories and the glowing reviews I had given the restaurant were by no means matched when we visited on Monday 13th June at around 10:30pm. On our arrival we stood aimless for around three minutes at the bar area before a rather flustered gentleman (30s, medium brown hair, medium length) in a suit greeted us with a reluctant "good evening"...He began to walk towards us, stopped, looked us up and down, and decided that preparing a jug of water for another table was more important. After a further 3-4 minute wait, he led us to the our table in silence, slapped down the menus (which were creased and stained) and flounced off again without a single word.
We then had the pleasure of meeting our waitress, a black lady in her thirties. From the offset she seemed unhappy to be serving us. I don't think her poor conduct was reserved only for us, she displayed the same charmless and sour attitude with our surrounding tables. She answered my (simple yet valid) questions about the set menu in a surly and dismissive manner. We ordered our drinks and some olives, before ordering two off the menu burgers. We waited for around 15 minutes for the olives, and after reminding our unfriendly and continuously rude waitress, we finally received the olives around five minutes before the main courses arrived. On a positive note, the food was excellent and met the high standard I was expecting. When we had finished, the suited man who seated us (who still looked like he could smell something unpleasant) cleared our table in clumsy, hostile silence. We got the bill, and after not paying the service charge (something which I don't normally question) we left without a single member of staff thanking us for our custom, or even gracing us with a simple good-bye.
The attitude of the staff we encountered was ridiculously bad, and we both left feeling disappointed and shocked.
