London Black Cabs are made by Hackney CarriagesHackney (the home of the Hackney Carriage Black Cab) has benefited from an extraordinary reversal of fortunes over the last few years with some of the fastest rising house prices in London, extensive council estate regeneration, a brand new underground station on the way and the tidying up of public spaces.

Fasset Square with its familiar railed green provided the model for the BBC's Eastender's Albert Square. A new Technology and Learning Centre is going to provide state of the art Library and Museum facilities, and the Ocean music venue is a huge space for the performing arts. The much-loved Hackney Empire is also spending 12million on refurbishment.

Hackney has no shortage of green space. Within the borders of E8 lies London Fields park, and just beyond, Hackney Downs and Victoria Park. The Grand Union Canal is on hand for lazy strolls whilst Hackney Marshes, over in E5, stages the worlds largest Sunday football kick-about every weekend.

For the time being overland trains run down from London Fields to Liverpool Street. By car or bus, Lea Bridge Road leads out towards junction 4 of the M11, and the East Cross Route is just across from Hackney Marshes. A map of the Hackney area.

You'll also find a world tour of gastronomic possibilities, from the traditional chippy (Faulkners) and Pie and Mash shop (F. Cookes) to offerings from farther flung corners of the globe with Indochine and Armadillo. Just outside central Hackney are the award nominees, Little Georgia and Shanghai and also the popular LMNT Gastro Bar.
